Our Wayfinder Coach Certification Process

Have you been wondering how to become a life coach?

As a Harvard-educated social scientist, bestselling author, and veteran life coach, my career has been spent changing countless lives using my signature tools, which I continuously update in response to emerging research in psychology, neuroscience, and even quantum mechanics.

In my Wayfinder Life Coach Training program, I teach you how to follow your own “North Star”—that deep inner knowing that guides us all. You’ll learn how to change your own life so you can help others change theirs.

Step 1: Decide if Wayfinder Life Coach Training is right for you.

Step 4: Meet your mentors.

Step 5: Complete the training and decide on certification.
Step 6: Apply for Wayfinder Life Coach Training.

Step 1: Decide if Wayfinder Life Coach Training is right for you.

Whether or not you decide to choose coaching as a career, the skills you’ll learn in Wayfinder Life Coach Training will make you happier and more effective in your professional and personal life. Many people go through the program without any intention of setting up a coaching business.

That being said, Wayfinder Life Coach Training is for you if any of these feel true:

  • You feel called to help others.
  • You believe traditional career paths and ways of working aren’t working for you.
  • You want to make a living that feels connected.
  • You want to bring Wayfinding skills to your current job and workplace.
  • You want to connect with a community of like minds who want to make an impact in the world.
  • You want to find your own compass and pave your own way.

We like to say that our coaching is a “live it to give it” proposition. That means that as you go through the training, absorbing the tools and being coached, you will find yourself improving your experiences in all areas of your life. You’ll feel more confident and have a greater sense of purpose across the board.

Graduates have told us that this training enhanced their abilities to serve as creatives, parents, professionals, leaders, and friends. Whatever your personal mission, this training will help you fulfill it.

Step 2. Familiarize yourself with the program.

To participate in Wayfinder Life Coach Training, you will need:

  • A computer or laptop
  • An internet connection
  • Zoom video conferencing for live sessions
  • The ability to view and interact with documents in PDF and Google Doc formats

All classes are conducted via Zoom video conferencing technology. This serves two purposes:

  • Classes are as interactive as possible while also giving you the ease and convenience of attending class from wherever you are in the world.
  • Zoom and similar technologies are some of the most commonly-used means of life coaching. By becoming adept at using videoconferencing software in your training, you’ll have a head start with client sessions!

Homework varies but we recommend that you set aside two to three hours per week.

This homework is not like schoolwork! We passionately believe that people learn best through fun, relaxed experiences that delight and motivate them.

Plan to review program materials AND practice coaching outside of class each week.

Live Coach Training Taught by Martha and Certified Master Coaches

In the first few weeks of Wayfinder Life Coach Training, you’ll tune in for the overview call and our first live class. These are always lots of fun!

Martha facilitates five classes per training with all of the different sections combined in one virtual classroom. For those classes, everyone will join at 1pm Eastern Time (ET), USA. If you can’t make it at that time, remember that all our classes are recorded and uploaded to your online learning site within 48 hours.

The remainder of your classes will be at the time you select upon registration: either at 1pm ET or 8pm ET.

Online Learning Space and Community Forums

You’ll be invited into the online learning space, where you can introduce yourself and start getting to know your instructors and peers. You’ll also gain access to the class resources, which include class outlines and objectives, explanations of the tools, and coaching demonstrations.

Coach-the-Coach Classes

Then you will join your Coach-the-Coach group, a small group of up to ten fellow Wayfinders who will be a huge part of your training experience. Coach-the-Coach classes include regular opportunities for observed coaching sessions with feedback from an instructor.

These interactive and hands-on classes comprise the bulk of your training. You’ll have the chance to work with the tools you’re learning from every angle: as “coach,” as “client,” and as the observer of your peers’ learning.

Your instructor in these classes will be a seasoned Wayfinder Master Coach with extensive experience using the tools in real-life contexts. You’ll feel empowered to practice coaching and receive constructive feedback.

Mentoring

Since our coaching methodology is so hands-on, guidance from experienced mentors is a key part of your training.

Mentoring sessions—both group sessions and one-on-one with an expert mentor—are your chance to ask any and every question you may have about coaching, from the nuts-and-bolts of the coaching tools to concerns about client sessions and relationships.

Business for Wayfinders Classes

Our business classes are full of exercises and processes to help you create clarity around your unique practice and to make ethical business decisions.

You will also have classes to coach and be coached around the business class exercises.

Evaluation and Certification

Many trainees choose to be certified as a Wayfinder Life Coach, though this process is optional. It is generally seen to lend legitimacy to your status as a life coach: a “seal of approval” and confirmation that you have mastered the Wayfinder tools and are ready to launch your practice as a full-fledged coach.

Step 3: Attend your first class.

Classes are held every week at 1pm and 8pm USA Eastern Time (ET). You’ll choose your time slot when you register, so make sure you can attend classes regularly at that time. All classes are 90 minutes.

All our classes are recorded and uploaded to your online learning site within 48 hours. You must attend a minimum number of observed coaching and mentoring sessions to qualify for certification, but that doesn’t mean that missing a few classes is problematic.

We’ve found that students who miss class but make arrangements to conscientiously do the work outside of class, are well prepared for certification.

Step 4: Meet your mentors.

Your mentors are experienced coaches who have built their own coaching practices and have been using Martha’s tools effectively for years.

There are two types of mentoring in Wayfinder Life Coach Training:

Group mentoring

The Group Mentoring sessions focus on integrating everything learned in the classes. Trainees have eight of these sessions, which will cover aspects of effective coaching, ethical decision-making, and the ICF core competencies. They also allow you ample opportunity to ask questions.

Individual (one-on-one) mentoring

All trainees wishing to pursue Wayfinder certification are offered three individual mentoring sessions over the course of the training. These sessions will be used to support you in becoming a more skillful coach and evaluate your coaching as you become a Certified Wayfinder Coach.

Step 5: Complete the training and decide on certification.

Our Wayfinder Life Coach certification process is part of your tuition, and it’s designed to give you the opportunity to become completely comfortable and confident as a Certified Wayfinder Life Coach.

Also, anyone who successfully completes our 211-hour training will have the coach training, mentoring hours, and evaluation that they need to apply for ICF credential at the Associate Certified Coach (ACC) or Professional Certified Coach (PCC) level.

Many trainees choose to be certified, though evaluation is optional and does not guarantee that you will be certified. To decide if you need a life coach certification, you can read more here.
